My tech has taken a simple but reliable MM and modified the leads so that they form 1/4 mono jack for reading bias. This is my second, backup pair that has seen very little use. This time is one of my favorite amps for use with the quad ESL-63's, Quicksilver 8417 moons. I mean, why would you do that. Buy a pair of 8417 amps to, know, use tubes.
Shipping is restricted to addresses in the continental USA. This is far more accurate than the old meters supplied by Quicksilver. Replaced with low-profile little fuse holders, the wimpy captive power chords an IRC connector.
The tubes are two matched pairs of GE 8417 with no more than 10 hours on them, to make sure that and amps work well. Unlike most of the 8417 amps i've come across, these have not been modified to accept newer tubes. Shipping for these two boxes from west to east coast will exceed after that, they went on the display shelf with other Quicksilver gear. These are the later GE version, using a single rectifier and able to accommodate both Philips 8417 tubes.
The meter has been tested and is accurate. The added bonus is that amps come with a far more accurate meter than dinky, wildly inaccurate one used to ship these. I use them with the quad ESL-63s and its one of best matches i've experienced for '63s.
Its not like the tubes are extinct: my strategic 8417 reserve holds nearly 100 new-in-the-box nos pairs of these. Slowly selling off the few remaining gems of my once large Quicksilver Audio collection. Finally and don't chuckle those atty-bitty feet that sanders' continues to favor have been replaced with new, more substantial taller ones, not for sonic reasons but so you can slip your hands under the chassis a better grip when moving them.
So in this case, a bias reading of 110mv is actually 118mv.
