The AU-217 Sansui Integrated Amplifier, a clean phono integrated amp, has its unique advantages and disadvantages that you should consider before making a purchasing decision:
Pros:1. Legendary Brand: Sansui is a well-known and respected brand in the audio industry. The AU-217's heritage can add a touch of nostalgia and trustworthiness to your audio setup.
2. Tube-Based Design: The AU-217's tube-based design provides a warm and natural sound that some people prefer over solid-state amplifiers.
3. Phono Stage: Built-in phono stage eliminates the need for an additional component, saving space and money.
4. Direct Drive Turntable Compatibility: The AU-217 can directly drive turntables with low output impedance, reducing the need for a preamp.
5. Vintage Aesthetic: The vintage-inspired design of the AU-217 can add a unique and stylish touch to any audio setup.
Cons:1. Tube-Based Maintenance: Tube-based amplifiers require regular maintenance, including replacement of tubes, which can be costly and time-consuming.
2. Lower Power Output: Compared to solid-state amplifiers, the AU-217's power output of 20 watts per channel may not be sufficient for driving high-impedance speakers or producing very loud volumes.
3. Limited Connectivity: The AU-217 has fewer inputs and outputs than modern amplifiers, which may limit the expandability of your audio system.
4. Potential Noise and Hum: Tube-based amplifiers can sometimes produce noise and hum, which can be more noticeable than in solid-state amplifiers.
Conclusion:The AU-217 Sansui Integrated Amplifier is an excellent choice for audiophiles who value the warm and natural sound of tube-based amplifiers and appreciate the vintage aesthetic. Its built-in phono stage and direct drive turntable compatibility make it a convenient and space-saving option. However, potential buyers should be aware of the maintenance requirements, limited connectivity, and potential noise and hum associated with tube-based amplifiers.
Recommendation:If you are looking for a unique and high-quality audio experience and are willing to invest in regular maintenance, the AU-217 Sansui Integrated Amplifier could be an excellent addition to your audio setup. However, ensure that you have the necessary space and resources to maintain the tubes and that you are satisfied with the limited connectivity options before making a purchase.
Nice old amp. The lettering on face plate is in nice shape. It is not bad.
The cord is shortened to about 2' and has a replacement plug. There is a small dent on one of the openings top cover. I tested this with a turntable and CD player.
It sounds good and the controls are quiet. It is in good clean condition.
