The Philco Ford TRC-20BK is a solid cassette tape recorder produced by Philco in the 1970s. This recorder was marketed as a Ford accessory and was sold exclusively through Ford dealerships. Here are some pros and cons of buying this vintage device:
Pros:1. Authentic Vintage Look: The TRC-20BK has a classic and attractive design, with a brown finish that complements Ford vehicles of the era.
2. Good Sound Quality: For its time, the Philco Ford TRC-20BK offered good sound quality, making it an excellent choice for recording and listening to music or spoken word content.
3. Durability: This recorder was built to last, with a solid construction that can still function well even after decades of use.
4. Nostalgic Value: For collectors and audiophiles, the Philco Ford TRC-20BK offers a unique piece of history, as it was a Ford accessory and is no longer in production.
Cons:1. Limited Functionality: The TRC-20BK is a vintage device, and as such, it lacks many features that are standard in modern tape recorders, such as Dolby noise reduction, stereo recording, and rewind/fast-forward controls.
2. Scarce Parts Availability: Since this recorder is no longer in production, finding replacement parts can be a challenge.
3. Tape Wear: Cassette tapes can degrade over time, leading to sound quality issues or even rendering the tapes unplayable.
4. Bulky Design: The TRC-20BK is a large and heavy device, making it less convenient to transport than modern portable tape recorders or digital audio players.
Conclusion:The Philco Ford TRC-20BK is a great choice for collectors, audiophiles, and those who appreciate the nostalgia of vintage technology. Its good sound quality, durability, and authentic vintage look make it an attractive addition to any collection. However, its limited functionality, scarce parts availability, and bulky design may make it less practical for everyday use. Ultimately, the decision to buy the Philco Ford TRC-20BK depends on one's personal preferences and priorities.
Recommendation:If you are looking for a vintage cassette tape recorder with good sound quality and a classic design, the Philco Ford TRC-20BK is an excellent choice. However, if you prioritize functionality and convenience, you may want to consider a modern portable tape recorder or a digital audio player instead. Additionally, be prepared for the potential challenges of maintaining and repairing this vintage device, as replacement parts may be hard to find.
Never played clearly. This is in very good clean shape. 4 C batteries were left in and one terminal had a little green corrosion. Also has the adjustable handle/strap.
No evidence of leaking but given its age. My guess and it is a guess that replacing the belts may solve issue but regardless new owner will want to service. Theres also some old tape residue in the front. Pressing the red Record button engaged recording elements.
Reverse moves the spool. When I put in a music tape, it tries and the reels spun but speed seemed off. Maybe Gorgon would take care of it. What I tested: - Play and Stop silver lever on front works.
Also may need some new caps. The side switch which controls forward and back moves. The components are very easy to access as there two screws on the bottom once removed gives board and mechanisms. I sanded it down, put in 4 new batteries and the reels started moving - mostly.
I could not find the external power supply. I did find the manual online for purchase and a belts replacement set. Helping parents downsize. Forward did not seem to have an effect.
Given the not so good playback, I didn see point in testing record function. What I didn test. So to that end I didn test the table microphone also included inside case.
