This is my opinion from having owned many Mcintosh amps, with exception of the newest model's, I personally don't care for informers back then, all audio chain was discrete bipolar. They have slowly come into their own among enthusiasts seeking purest unvarnished amplification. When it was phased out with amplifiers without countdown test circuit and non-db meters. Mc2002 was a stablemate back in the middle 80s.

Auto or transformer should sound better. Better is definitely subjective here. They are built at lower price-point than more coveted amplifiers of the era, mc2205 and, unparalleled beast, mc2255.

I've had numerous inquiries about difference between Mcintosh amplifiers with and without informers. Through 1,250. Mc2002 use direct coupled rated at 200w into 8 ohms, and 300w 4 ohms.

Best of Mcintosh early digital solid state engineering designed to mimic warmness tube amplifiers. Mcintosh MC-2002 in near mint condition, sounds amazing. Also, keep in mind that solid state amps are near zero output z besides the non-zero NB designs might be 1 ohm or so, they delivering flat frequency response. Because, like I stated earlier, modern processors have surpassed the necessity for informers.

These are designed for pure amplification with hardly any enhancements or massaging Mcintosh patented informers. Informers are Mcintosh novelty, patented by Mcintosh, and why it is not used other manufacturers.

Its been a good selling feature for Mcintosh because it is their proprietary patented technology. Lots of Mcintosh pre amplifier and amplifiers all incorporate informers power guard circuitry to drive as little 2 ohms, some even 1 ohm.

These why there is renewed interest in amps like mc2002, mc72 mc7270, multi-channel amps, etc. Because many modern processors do all the work upstream, leaving pure amplification to amplifier, and speakers deliver stunning capabilities downstream. So, between superior processors or pre amplifiers and speakers, need for role of an auto former is diminished, such that comparative differences are minimal when compared with direct coupled amplifier like the mc2002 informers do indeed introduce certain acoustic characteristics to amplifiers make them sound different, maybe better than ones without x 181mm 7.
