Review RCA Pair Vintage Op-7 Portable Tube Broadcast Mixerpreamp

The RCA OP-6/OP-7 Tube Broadcast Mixer/Preamp is an iconic piece of vintage audio equipment, offering a unique blend of vintage sound and modern flexibility. This unrestored unit features two separate channels, each equipped with a pair of 12AX7 tubes, delivering a warm, rich, and dynamic sound that is characteristic of tube amplifiers.

The OP-6/OP-7 is a versatile mixer, ideal for broadcast applications, live performances, or studio recording. Each channel offers independent gain control, allowing you to balance the input levels of microphones, instruments, or line sources. The mixer also features a high-pass filter, which helps to reduce unwanted low-frequency noise, ensuring a clean and focused sound.

The preamp section of the OP-6/OP-7 is where the magic happens. Each channel provides an input impedance switch, allowing you to choose between low-impedance microphone and high-impedance instrument inputs. The preamps also feature a phantom power switch for use with condenser microphones. The OP-6/OP-7's output stage is capable of driving a variety of power amplifiers, making it a versatile solution for both studio and live applications.

This unrestored RCA OP-6/OP-7 Tube Broadcast Mixer/Preamp is a true time capsule, offering a glimpse into the past while delivering a sound that is as relevant today as it was when it was first introduced. Its rugged construction, coupled with its timeless design, ensures that it will continue to serve as a reliable and cherished piece of audio equipment for years to come. Whether you're a vintage enthusiast, a studio engineer, or a live sound technician, this RCA OP-6/OP-7 Tube Broadcast Mixer/Preamp is an investment in sound quality and history that you won't regret.

Pros of buying an RCA OP-6/OP-7 tube broadcast mixer/preamp:

1. Vintage charm: The RCA OP-6/OP-7 mixers have a classic, vintage look that can add character and aesthetic value to any studio or home audio setup.

2. Tube sound: Tube preamps are known for their warm, rich, and nuanced sound, which can make recordings sound more natural and organic.

3. Versatility: These mixers can be used for a variety of applications, such as broadcasting, recording, and live performances.

4. Durability: Tube equipment is often built to last, and these mixers are no exception. They can withstand heavy use and are repairable with the right skills and parts.

Cons of buying an RCA OP-6/OP-7 tube broadcast mixer/preamp:

1. Cost: Tube equipment can be expensive, and these mixers are no exception. The cost of repairing or restoring them can add up as well.

2. Maintenance: Tube equipment requires regular maintenance to keep it running properly. This includes regular cleaning, alignment, and replacement of tubes.

3. Limited features: Compared to modern mixers, the RCA OP-6/OP-7 mixers have limited features, such as limited input/output channels and no digital connectivity.

4. Size and weight: These mixers are large and heavy, which can make them difficult to transport or store.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a vintage, warm, and natural sound, the RCA OP-6/OP-7 tube broadcast mixers are a great option. However, be prepared for the additional cost, maintenance, and limited features that come with tube equipment. If you are not willing to invest the time and money required to maintain and repair these mixers, you may want to consider a modern digital mixer instead.

Recommendation: If you are interested in purchasing an RCA OP-6/OP-7 tube broadcast mixer, I would recommend doing your research and checking out the condition of the equipment before buying. Make sure to budget for any potential repairs or restoration costs. Additionally, consider your specific needs and whether the limitations of these mixers will be a problem for you. If you are confident that you can handle the maintenance and cost, then these mixers can be a great addition to your audio setup.
